On the contrary, when the apm sim is placed in the regular insert slot on the channel strip in the Console, there is no clipping as the volume is so much quieter and there is a lot of headroom for the amp sim's master volume. I wish that were explained in the manuals but I was not able to find anything like that in them.
If I dial down the power amp to fix the clipping I am noting that it takes away from the sound character.
I would understand this better if there was a master volume (not the amp sim's master volume which can be used to add the effect of a pushed power amp section). The idea those are sold on is the real impedance match (and more realistic representation of the original sound of the amp) so this "unison" improvement seems to be destroyed by the clipping. This leaves me wondering how come they have been dialed like that in the first place? Or, if they have not been clipping when originally dialed, was it tested on various guitars with low, mid and hot output. What I am noting on all ams sims I am using is that almost all "factory presets" are clipping the output of the channel when the plugin is in the Unison slot on Hi Z input, even the clean sound presets. So, keep as long as I start with the Apollo at minimum gain, I can often use the sims in the regular inserts, but I get better result starting with the Apollo low, adding the sim to the Unison slot, then adjust the level. It works, as does the Savage, and the same with the Fender Tweed. With the presets I can get clean to total grunge. That said, my original Apollo SF didn't have Unison capability on the HiZ inputs, so I didn't know what Unison would do until I bought an x8. After that I played with the presets and found a few I like, but that sim was still a bit too much for my taste - until Unison. Some time later it was either sjgam or serenity who mentioned setting the Apollo's gain all the way down, then bring up the guitar.
Every time I played with that plug-in it was pretty much unusable, I thought. Oh man, this is gong to sound great I thought, then I fired it up. When I first bought an Apollo, one of the plug-ins I acquired with the bundle I bought, was the two Engl sims. Most of the guitars I use are Strats with single coil pickups - not hight output.
